A historic Catholic relic identified as Saint Hermolaus of Nicomedia, Priest and Martyr, accompanied by an ecclesiastical certificate issued in Jerusalem in 1918.

The handwritten Latin inscription on the certificate reads Ex ossibus Sancti Hermolai Nicomediensis, Presbyteri et Martyris, meaning “from the bones of Saint Hermolaus of Nicomedia, priest and martyr.”

The certificate is dated 12 May 1918 and bears the name of Philippe Maria Camassei, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem. It records the placement of the relic in a properly closed reliquary and grants permission for it to be retained and exposed for the veneration of the faithful, according to the wording of the document.

The relic is preserved in an ornate gold-tone metal theca with a glass front. Its decorative star-shaped frame, green and red backing, and traditional relic label give it the appearance of a classic early twentieth-century Catholic devotional object.

Saint Hermolaus is traditionally associated with the early Christian community of Nicomedia and is venerated as a priest and martyr. This piece offers a tangible connection to the history of Catholic devotional practice and the tradition of documenting and preserving sacred relics.
