At Sacra Relics we deal in sacred objects — reliquaries, thecas, and second-class relics — for collectors, historians, and the faithful. Every object is described by one standard: state what is known, document what accompanies it, and never overstate what cannot be proven.
The classes of relics
For clarity, the traditional classes are: first-class — the physical remains of a saint; second-class — objects a saint owned, used, or wore in life, such as vestments or personal effects; third-class — objects deliberately touched to a relic of a higher class. Our catalogue centres on second-class relics and on the thecas and reliquaries that house them.
Provenance
Where an object comes from, and its history of custody, matters more than any single claim. For each piece we record and disclose what we know: origin, approximate period, prior collection or estate, and how it came to us. Where a link in that history is uncertain, we say so plainly rather than fill the gap.
Authentication
Many older reliquaries are accompanied by period documentation — an authentica, a wax seal, sealed threads, or a certificate from the issuing authority of its time. Where such documentation exists, we describe it and, where possible, show it. Where a seal is intact, we note it; where it is broken or absent, we note that too.
A candid word: authenticity in this field can rarely be proven with modern certainty. Documents and seals attest to a tradition of attribution, not to laboratory proof. We present the evidence as it stands and leave the final judgement to you. That honesty is the whole of our reputation.
Condition & care
Each object is unique and sold as a single piece. We describe condition frankly — patina, wear, repairs, and whether a theca has been opened. These are historical artefacts and should be kept accordingly.
Intended use
The items we offer are intended for private devotion, study, and collection, and we ask that they be treated with the respect their history warrants.
