A charming vintage Green Scapular in its original German-language edition, still sealed in its protective cellophane sleeve exactly as it was distributed to the faithful.

The front shows the Blessed Virgin Mary standing upon the globe, holding her Immaculate Heart, wreathed in flames, before her breast — the image traditionally associated with the Green Scapular. The reverse bears the cross above the Immaculate Heart pierced by a sword, with drops of blood, encircled by the German prayer:

“Unbeflecktes Herz Mariä, bitte für uns jetzt und in der Stunde unseres Todes”
(“Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death”)

About the Green Scapular

The Green Scapular originates from the visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary received in 1840 by Sister Justine Bisqueyburu, a Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in Paris. It was approved by Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1863 and again in 1870. Unlike other scapulars, it is not the badge of a confraternity and requires no formal investiture: it may be worn, carried, or quietly placed among the belongings of a loved one, with the prayer above recited daily. It has long been treasured as a devotion for conversion and for a holy death.
