Guido de’ Medici Autograph Letter – Rome, 21 August 1524

A remarkable Guido de’ Medici autograph letter from 1524, handwritten and signed in Rome on 21 August 1524. This original Renaissance manuscript is associated with the extended Medici family of Florence, one of the most influential dynasties of Renaissance Italy.

Written in Italian in dark iron-gall ink on laid paper, the letter measures approximately 29 × 21 cm. It is addressed to Roberto de Beccutis, referred to in the document as “avunculo meo”, and concerns financial matters, including requests relating to outstanding payments, ecclesiastical revenues and the church of Santo Apollinare.

The document offers an intriguing glimpse into the administrative and financial networks of Renaissance Italy, particularly the connections between family interests, ecclesiastical revenues and financial obligations in the early 16th century.

The lower portion of the manuscript bears the signature:

“Guido de Medici”

Medici Family & Renaissance Context

Dating to 1524, the manuscript belongs to a period when Florence and Rome were deeply connected through political, financial and ecclesiastical networks.
