Saint Teresa of Jesus — Antique Carmelite Devotional Card with Contact Relic

A beautiful and historically evocative devotional piece dedicated to Saint Teresa of Jesus (Teresa of Ávila), the great Carmelite reformer, mystic and Doctor of the Church.

The front features an engraved devotional image of Sancta Theresia a Jesu, surrounded by angels and a heavenly vision. The lower inscription identifies her as:

“Sancta Theresia a Jesu
Reformatrix Ordinis Carmelitarum”

— Saint Teresa of Jesus, Reformer of the Carmelite Order.

The image is identified as Série Carmel I, no. 5, published by Van Fleteren, Éditeurs, Haut Port, Gand.

The reverse contains an especially interesting historical inscription in Latin. It states that a particle attached to the image came from the grilles associated with the choir of the Carmelite nuns in Segovia, traditionally connected with Saint Teresa of Jesus.

The original aged paper, printing, handwritten inscription and ecclesiastical imagery give this piece a wonderful sense of history and make it particularly appealing to collectors of Carmelite devotional art, Catholic ephemera, antique holy cards and relic-related objects.
