Antique Purple Scapular Devotional Booklet | Scapular of Benediction & Protection | Marie-Julie Jahenny

A rare vintage Catholic devotional booklet dedicated to the Scapular of Benediction and Protection, traditionally associated with the mystical experiences of Marie-Julie Jahenny of La Fraudais.

The cover is titled:

“SKAPULIER VAN ZEGENING EN BESCHERMING”

— Dutch for “Scapular of Benediction and Protection.”

The booklet explains the origin and symbolism of this unusual scapular, which is associated with an ecstasy reported by Marie-Julie Jahenny on 23 August 1878.

According to the devotional tradition, Jahenny described seeing a large violet-colored scapular associated with the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Its symbolism included the three nails of the Crucifixion, drops of blood, a sponge, a chalice and a crown of thorns. The booklet reproduces and explains these elements in considerable detail.

The interior also contains a lengthy Dutch-language account of the reported revelation, including descriptions of the Passion symbols and prayers associated with the scapular.

The reverse provides practical information concerning obtaining the scapular through the Association des Amis de Marie-Julie Jahenny, including the name and address of its secretary in France.

This is an unusual piece of Catholic devotional ephemera documenting a relatively uncommon scapular tradition and the devotional movement surrounding Marie-Julie Jahenny.
