Saint Madeleine-Sophie Barat – Relic from the Cloth of Her Coffin

A rare and historically significant Catholic relic associated with Saint Madeleine-Sophie Barat (1779–1865), founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The original French inscription reads:

“Parcelle de l’étoffe du cercueil de Sainte Madeleine-Sophie”

which translates as:

“A small piece of the cloth from the coffin of Saint Madeleine-Sophie.”

The relic consists of a tiny textile fragment preserved within its original vintage paper presentation and devotional envelope. The front bears a traditional religious emblem, while the reverse carries the identification of the relic in French.

Saint Madeleine-Sophie Barat devoted her life to prayer, education and the formation of women. In 1800 she founded the Society of the Sacred Heart, which subsequently developed into an international religious congregation dedicated particularly to education. At the time of her death in Paris in 1865, the Society had grown to thousands of members.

Madeleine-Sophie Barat was beatified in 1908 and canonized by Pope Pius XI in Rome in 1925. Her mortal remains are preserved in a monumental reliquary at the Church of Saint-François-Xavier in Paris.
