Antique Green Scapular of the Immaculate Heart of Mary | German Catholic Devotional
A beautiful antique Green Scapular of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, featuring traditional Marian imagery and a German devotional inscription.
This small devotional scapular is made from green wool/felt fabric and features the traditional imagery associated with the Green Scapular.
One side depicts the Immaculate Heart of Mary, pierced by a sword and surrounded by flames, with a cross above. Around the Heart is the German prayer:
“Unbeflecktes Herz Maria, bitte für uns jetzt und in der Stunde unseres Todes.”
The reverse depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary holding Her Immaculate Heart.
The Green Scapular is a distinctive Catholic devotional associated with the visions reported by Sister Justine Bisqueyburu, a Daughter of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, in 1840. The devotion was subsequently approved for production and distribution by Pope Pius IX in the 19th century.
Unlike the traditional multi-piece scapulars associated with religious orders, the Green Scapular traditionally consists of a single piece of green fabric with an image on each side, making this small devotional object particularly distinctive.
This example has a charmingly simple, early devotional appearance, with a cream-coloured printed surface mounted on green fabric and naturally aged edges.
A lovely piece for collectors of Marian devotional objects, antique Catholic sacramentals, religious textiles and historic European devotional art.
