Antique Chinese Mother-of-Pearl Inlaid Wooden Box

A charming antique wooden box decorated with finely engraved mother-of-pearl (shell) panels in the chinoiserie taste. The hinged lid features an oval cartouche depicting a classic Asian landscape — a multi-tiered pagoda, gnarled trees, rocks and a robed figure — surrounded by geometric and floral borders. The front, sides and back are inlaid with further engraved shell panels showing pagodas, foliage and a small brass clasp.

Likely Chinese export work, late 19th to early 20th century.

Dimensions: approx. 13 cm long × 9 cm wide × 7 cm high (see photos with ruler).

Condition: Sold as found, in antique/used condition. Please note: some shell panels show cracks and old losses, the wood has wear, scratches and chips to the corners (visible in photos). Brass hinges and clasp present; lid opens and closes. The iridescence of the shell shows beautifully in the light.
